WELCOME!

Welcome to the MTA Farm blog! This blog will follow the happenings of the MTA farm throughout the summer and fall growing seasons, as we grow a variety of mixed vegetables to be used by the MTA dining services. We will be posting updates on what's happening at the farm, photos, and great opportunities to come out and visit or volunteer.

Started in the summer of 2011, the Mount Allison Farm was established as a means of providing a local and fresh source of produce to Mount Allison's Dining Services. Located between King and York Street on the other side of Kirk Street, the farm produces a variety of vegetables each year including potatoes, onions, lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, herbs, corn, beans, and many others. The farm is managed by the Director of Administrative Services (Michelle Strain) with the assistance of local potato farmer John Killoran and two students, Sydney Bliss and Erik Fraser. The final destination for these vegetables is Jenning's Dining Hall were they are enjoyed by Mount Allison students in the fall semester.

The goals of the farm are to:

· to grow vegetables for the dining hall;

· to decrease MTA food costs;

· to increase food quality;

· to provide an outlet for campus compost;

· to employ students to work the land to produce the food we eat; and

· to create a connection between students and food in our increasingly urbanized world
